It Takes a Roadmap to Achieve a 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Goal

Introducing LevelTen’s Procurement Roadmap Report, a new report to inform 24/7 carbon-free strategies, used by Iron Mountain to advance its energy usage goals

A growing number of corporations and other sustainability leaders are looking beyond annual clean energy usage targets, setting new procurement strategies that focus on reducing demand for fossil fuels in all locations, at all hours of the day. To implement a 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) strategy, companies first need to understand how much electricity they consume, and exactly where it comes from. Then, they need to procure CFE that is generated in the locations and hours that aren’t currently being served by carbon-free energy. They also need to estimate what their future electricity needs will be, and enter into contracts for carbon-free energy that will match those future needs.

Today, LevelTen Energy is introducing its Procurement Roadmap Report for 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy, a new custom report that generates the optimal portfolio of clean energy contracts to meet 24/7 CFE targets at the lowest cost. The analysis takes into account a company’s current and projected electricity usage, and then evaluates all power purchase agreement offers available on the LevelTen Platform to generate a recommended portfolio of wind, solar and storage projects that would help a company achieve its 24/7 goals. Organizations can use the analysis to see how much they would need to spend to achieve an 80% CFE target, as opposed to a 50% or 90% target, for example. The analysis also provides a practical roadmap that helps energy procurement teams plan their strategy, including what types of projects they need to procure from, where, when, and in what volumes.

Collecting and analyzing this data has traditionally been a time-intensive process requiring immense internal resources, which most companies don’t have. By equipping organizations with the information they need to assess a 24/7 goal, LevelTen Energy is enabling more companies to set them in the first place. With a roadmap in hand, they can then make progress on their targets at the lowest cost.

Google has been a prominent leader in this space, as one of the first companies to commit to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) globally by 2030. In 2021, following Google’s lead, global information leader Iron Mountain announced it would seek “to achieve 100% renewable energy use 100% of the time by 2040.” To achieve this goal, Iron Mountain turned to Google for help, and Google partnered with LevelTen Energy and other organizations to develop a holistic solution to meet their needs.

The case study is available for download below. Read how Iron Mountain used LevelTen’s Procurement Roadmap Report to determine which mix of carbon-free energy would get them closer to their CFE goals in the most cost-effective and efficient way.
